It's a special issue dedicated to our gnomonist friend Alessandro Gunella.

1. "Curriculum vitae (self-produced)" by Gunella Alessandro
2."Note on the book by Giuseppe Sacchi <Gnomonica piana> - Pavia 1846" by Gunella Alessandro
In this article the author takes the opportunity from the recommendation of the book by Giuseppe Sacchi to discuss the problem of the "three points". This problem has been faced over the centuries by many experts in the sector, starting from Vitruvius to Zarbula and passing through Igino Gromatico, Al Biruni, Nuñes, Clavio, Kircher, Grienberger, Oddi, Ozanam, Desargues, Guarini, De la Hire, Mahistre.
3. "Stefano Di Giovanni: an author from the 19th century who plays with the Italic Hours" by Gunella Alessandro
The study of Italian sundials in the nineteenth century benefited from a considerable theoretical research, although as a matter of fact (or maybe because) this kind of dials was no longer in use. In 1843, Father Stefano Di Giovanni publishes a theoretical study with which he identifies new criteria for tracing Italic sundials on horizontal planes. He also proposes the use of a particular hour line, which he calls "Verticale Italico", for the correct regulation of mechanical clocks and he finally identifies a particular mathematical curve which he calls "Orizzontoide".
4. "A small techique by Clavio not to <get out of the sheet>" by Gunella Alessandro
The article is inspired by a 24-page booklet "Compendium brevissimum describendorum Horologiorum ..." written by Clavius in 1603. When you build a non-declining (or horizontal) sundial with the classic graphical method, sometimes the more distant lines from noon (like the lines of the hours 8 and 7 o'clock in the morning, or the correspondents in the afternoon) have very distant references on the Equinoxial line. Clavius in his handbook indicates a method to remedy this problem. The author of this article explains the geometric reasons why this method works.
5. "The declination of the Sun in a day of <n> hours" by Gunella Alessandro
It is here proposed to look for the declination of the parallel covered by the Sun on a day when the hours of light are "n", and the night is 24-n hours, in a place where Latitude is given, by means of a graphical method. The solution is based on the sixteenth-century text by G. B. Benedetti.
6. "Notes about Italic sundials" by Gunella Alessandro
The article is a summary, very partial of topics concerning the Italic hours, debated here and there in texts from the 16th and 17th centuries.
7- "The extreme points of the Italic hours" by Gunella Alessandro
The author, inspired by the "usual" book "De gnomonum umbrarumque ..." published in 1573 by G. B. Benedetti, explains in this article how to find the extreme points of the Italic lines without using the solstice curves built for equal hours sundials.
8. "Apianus and the graphical solution for spherical triangles" by Gunella Alessandro
The solution of spherical triangles is here debated with a graphical method starting from what Apianus explained in 1540 in his book "Astronomicum Caesareum", using a universal astrolabe called " Arzaquiel's Scaphea"
9. "A bifilar sundials with two catenaries solved graphically" by Gunella Alessandro
In this article the author "challenges" vector algebra. A graphical solution is presented for the construction of a bifilar sundial with wires arranged as catenaries.
10. "The Gnomonic Transformation" by Gunella Alessandro
In this article the author is inspired by a Gnudi's text from 1700 entitled "La Tramutazione Gnomonica" or the method to build any vertical declining sundial starting from a horizontal sundial. The method here described is a reworked version by the author.
11. "Exactly the same: a predecessor of the Vinaccia diagram" by Gunella Alessandro
The Vinaccia diagram was discussed by Gunella in n. 13 of this magazine. "The Analemma and the Universal Compass" was the title of the article. But already in the work by Father Egidi "Un Orologio Solare Universale" published in Rome in 1881 and so preceding Vinaccia publication, a method is shown to find local time for any latitude: a first step towards Vinaccia diagram. This method is here briefly illustrated.
12. "A horizontal Italic sundial by Foster – Lambert" by Gunella Alessandro
In issue 24 number 2 of the NASS magazine "The Compendium" an interesting sundial proposed by Steve Lelievre, a Canadian gnomonist from Vancouver, showed off on the cover. This is an interactive horizontal Italic sundial of the Foster Lambert type. In this article an analysis of the author, using the usual graphical method, is exposed.

1. "A meridian line to free Napoleon" by Albèri Auber Paolo
This article expands the topic already presented in November 2009 in Gnomonica Italiana n. 19. A careful research on some details, also technical, of the meridian line itself (autumn equinox) and on the ephemeris "Norie", as well as several precise clues concerning the presence and projects of Gerolamo Bonaparte in Trieste, lead to formulate, without too many risks, a new hypothesis. Behind the Meridian Line there was a context not only purely technological. An important revolutionary (then failed) project of Napoleon supporters for South America had to finish with the liberation of Napoleon at that time prisoner in the island of Saint Elena.
2. "A 'hat' sundial now missing" by Casalegno Gianpiero
A sundial, now missing, in the revolving restaurant housed in the Olympic Tower in Munich is described. The article illustrates the working principle together with a possible method for its calculation.
3. "Transits and sun heights" by Caviglia Francesco
The article analyzes which is the time instant of maximum daily height of the Sun, not corresponding to that of the transit on the meridian. Then the symmetry of the time-height curve of the Sun with respect to the moment of transit on the meridian is discussed, a question which for the dialist is more important than the previous one. Finally, the symmetry of the azimuth-height curve of the Sun with respect to the South is analyzed.
4. "Equatorial or cylindrical polar sundial?" by Clarà Francesc
The author wonders how an equatorial sundial, sometimes called cylindrical polar, should be called. After a brief explanation, he describes how to build a model.
5. "A sundial in the desert. A 'balatā' in a 'casba' in Sahara." by Martínez Almirón Esteban
The article examines an ancient horizontal sundial situated in a location in Morocco, at the edge of the desert. The dial has Islamic characteristics and it was probably used for resolving the hours of prayers and the direction of Mecca.
6. "A blade of light in an ancient oratory" by Ferrari Gianni
The article describes the blade of light produced by a small window in an old oratory in Abano Terme and its behavior is studied.
7. "Proposals to graphically deal with a sundial on a declining inclined plane" by Gunella Alessandro
The proposed text wants to examine, with criterions of a 16th –17th century Dialist, the construction of a dial on a declining plane, "nearly vertical." It’s hence about an exclusively graphic method, in use at that time. A subject some centuries late, as it’s usual for me. Ideas of the School of Clavius are quoted, together with proposals from the french Hérigone, with some references to criterions used by Desargues in building sites (according to the book by Bosse).
8. "Nordic solar instruments in the Viking Age" by Langer Johnni e Sterza Lorenzo
The article presents a bibliographic organization of the knowledge of solar astronomy among the Nordics in the Viking Age, in particular through the description of instruments findings discovered by archaeologists.
9. "The roman sundials of the ancient Praeneste (second part)" by Severino Nicola
The measure of time in Roman Praeneste, illustrated through the myth of the Varrone Horologium and the Roman period sundials of great importance, among which two recently found in archaeological excavations.
10. "Altitude sundials from the notebook by Daniele Barbaro" by Stocco Elsa
Two altitude sundials are describes, that Daniele Barbaro considers in his
manuscript "De horologiis describendis libellus", a notebook of preparatory
notes to commentaries on the Ten Books of Vitruvian Architecture.

1. "Mithraism and ancient gnomonics" by Albéri Auber Paolo
The article presents at least two ancient sundials that can be connected in a very strict and incontrovertible way to Mithraism thanks to the inscription. On other occasions the author already pointed out some inescapable traces of the Mithraic ideology in gnomonics: the Plintio of Euporus in Aquileia and a sundial with crescent Moon from Concordia Sagittaria. These precise evidences, here reported and commented, now provide an even more solid picture of the Mithraic links in ancient gnomonics, at least in the high-Adriatic area.
2. "Paper sundials by transparency" by Anselmi Riccardo
The article topic concerns a series of small paper dials that, except for the first one, work both by transparency and by reflection.
3. "An original bifilar sundial with helix wires" by Baggio Francesco
The author illustrates an original creation: a bifilar portable polar helix sundial. The method used for the calculation is also shown in the final appendix.
4. "The human body as the first solar gnomon" by Calvino Ruben
The human body was the first tool for measuring shadows and, apart from us, no human variant left an evidence of knowing the gnomon. This was therefore an exclusive practice of our ancestors, which would then have surely influenced the perfection of our graceful appearance, vertical posture and bipedalism, and finally led to the physical and external reproduction of our body, in the form of a sundial gnomon.
5. "An original monumental sundial" by Casalegno Gianpiero
The article describes a monumental sundial created in a subway station in Munich, which takes advantage of the shadow projected from the edge of a truncated cone "well" on the walls and on the floor of the same. The operating principle of this sundial is illustrated, together with a possible method for its calculation.
6. "The sundial of Sant'Ambrogio, now of the Catholic University of Milan" by Del Favero Enrico
The 1756 meridian line of the Sant'Ambrogio Monastery in Milan was incorporated in 1797 into a military hospital, which became the location of the Catholic University in 1929. The work was destroyed with the air attack of Milan in 1943. But the discovery of an important document in Umbria now allows its almost complete reconstruction.
7. "Gnomon consisting of multiple lenses" by Ferrari Gianni
The article deals with the geometric optical study of a system with multiple thin lenses and the possibility of using it as a gnomonic point in a sundial.
8. "A graphic problem: comparison between Analemma and Saphea" by Gunella Alessandro
The comparison between graphic techniques based on the schema of the Analemma and the Saphea is a sort of seventeenth – eighteenth century residual of the use of such tools in an era preceding the development of mathematics and astronomy, which have relegated these tools in a corner.
9. "The roman sundials of the ancient Praeneste (first part)" by Severino Nicola

1. "Paralipomeni of the "daylight triangle" on horizontal sundials" by Albéri Auber Paolo
After the Gnomonic National Seminar held in Chatillon in October 2012, the author was correctly urged by Alessandro Gunella to elaborate (Paralipomeni) on what is written in the records. The subject of the daylight triangle and more generally of the estimate of the duration of the day in different seasons is thus resumed.
2. "The daylight triangle and its use" by Albéri Auber Paolo and Caviglia Francesco
The article explains what the daylight triangle, little-known to today's gnomonists, is and how it must be used to deduce the length of the day in different seasons. In particular, the problem of how to use the triangle in an ancient (or temporal) sundial is addressed; actually, the operation is not immediate in this case and it requires some calculation.
3. "Bifilar sundials with Photoshop" by Caviglia Francesco and Nicelli Alberto
A fundamental property of bifilar sundials on flat surfaces with rectilinear wires parallel to the dial is recalled: to be simply achievable by scaling one of the cartesian coordinates of a gnomonic point sundial drawn on the same dial. How this transformation can be done using an image processing program is explained and formulas to obtain it through calculation are reported.
4. "Equatorial sundial" by Coco Nicola
The construction and operation of a simple equatorial sundial, elegant and instructive, is described. A brief reminder of the French gnomonist Robert Sagot, who proposed this sundial model in a short paper, is reported in the Appendix.
5. "Personal considerations on the gnomonic history (2nd part)" by Gunella Alessandro
The article is the author personal excursus into the part of the gnomonic history limited to Europe and to Mediterranean. A stimulus for those who may want to complete it in any deficient or missing parts.
6. "Matelica & Prosymna: the point of view of one who makes use of graphical methods only" by Gunella Alessandro
Following the recent articles concerning the Sphere of Prosymna, published in "The Compendium" and in this magazine, the author, having resumed part of his discussion on the Matelica sphere already published in 1999 in the UAI magazine "Gnomonica Italiana", analyzes by means of graphical methods only the traces marked on the Prosymna globe.
7. "Transparency sundial with trifocal lens gnomon" by Cesare Lucarini and Mario Catamo
On a glass window at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", the authors have built a transparency sundial with a trifocal lens gnomon. The construction process is illustrated, from calculation to drawing, glass engraving, decoration and assembly. Special attention is given to the description of the gnomon, consisting of a trifocal lens that focuses the light spot, greatly enhancing the vision by transparency, inadequate with traditional methods because of the large dimensions of the sundial. The time shown is the TMEC noon.
8. "Reflection sundials" by Savoie Denis
Formulas for the calculation of reflection sundials, where both mirror and dial have a generic orientation, are reported.
9. "An unusual horizontal height sundial" by Denis Savoie and Joseph Theubet
The unusual horizontal height sundial installed in front of the Museum of the History of Science in Geneva is discussed. The instrument dial is drawn on a rotating disk, to be oriented according to the date and to the direction of the Sun.
10. "Return from the past" by Stocco Elsa
The author describes the recovery phases of an ancient Italic sundial on the block of a historic Trevigiano farm: a teamwork that combined techniques of conservative restoration with those of gnomonic computation. On the ancient plaster, which has regained the material finesse, the original appearance and vibrations, the ancient sundial returns to live and to mark time, symbol of a place connected to the culture of earth and nature and therefore unavoidably to Sun and heaven.

El pasado septiembre un miembro de la Asociación Ilicitana de Astronomía (AIA), José Antonio Pérez, nos envió un documento sobre los relojes de sol romanos en HISPANIA. Trabajo que ha estado realizando desde hace un tiempo sobre "La división del Tiempo en la Antigua Roma", los relojes de sol en Hispania corresponden al último capítulo de dicha obra.
Hoy hemos incluido una reseña sobre dicho trabajo en nuestra web, adjuntando el documento y una base de datos anexa, en Access, que contiene fichas de los relojes hispánicos conocidos hasta la fecha (30). Ver el enlace:

Über viele Ausgaben der katalanischen Sonnenuhren-Zeitschrift LA BUSCA DE PAPER war ich sozusagen das Maskottchen von Seite 2! Nun ist aber Schluß damit!
Ich durfte letztmalig in der wirklich prächtigen Jubiläumsausgabe Nummer 75 von 2013 erscheinen:
Aufgenommen hatte dieses Bild im Jahr 2007 Conxita Bou und ich fühlte mich so einmalig wohl in dieser Sonnenuhr in Barcelona!
Man sollte viel mehr Sonnenuhren bauen, in denen man sich aufhalten kann!
Ich weiß, wovon ich spreche, denn ich kann dieses wunderbare Gefühl hier in der Kopernikusstraße 125 in Bremen gleich zweifach genießen, wenn ich mich bei Sonnenschein in einer meiner beiden Reflex-Sonnenuhren r1 oder r2 aufhalte!

Le cadran solaire de Tavel a 20 ans
L’année 2013 est celle du vingtième anniversaire de la nef solaire installée sur l’aire nord de Tavel dans le Gard, autoroute A9, près d’Avignon. Calculée par Denis Savoie, elle a été réalisée par les Autoroutes du Sud de la France (ASF).
Cadran Info n° 27 de mai 2013 offre quelques articles (version C.I numérique) sur le sujet ainsi que la présentation par D. Savoie, de <small>points laissés de côté à ce jour (C.I numérique et version papier).</small>

Ich bin nun schon zum vierten Mal in Folge zur Herbsttagung der französischen Sonnenuhrgesellschaft CCS gefahren und habe dort auch wieder einen Vortrag gehalten:
Ich halte meine Vorträge immer in englischer Sprache, weil ich sie so bequem mit Sonnenuhrfreunden aus aller Welt austauschen kann und auch weil ich am Gymnasium leider Latein statt Französich gewählt hatte. So brauche ich auch immer einen lieben Menschen, der mir meinen Vortrag live in Französisch einspricht. In diesem Jahr hat dies mein Freund Joël Robic - kongenial - übernommen!
Die Tagung fand diesmal im Atrium Kulturzentrum von Chaville ganz in der Nähe von Paris statt, wiederum ein gefährlicher Ort für mich - weil ich am Ende der Tagung zusammen mit Philippe Sauvageot im gläsernen Aufzug steckenblieb und lange Zeit ungewiß war, wann wir befreit würden, da offenkundig die Aufzugsfirma am Samstag nach 18 Uhr keinen Rettungsservice bereithielt... Wir wurden aber nach ca. 35 Minuten banger Wartezeit schließlich doch von zwei Arbeitern des Zentrums befreit...
Ich hatte für meinen Vortrag drei Poster und reiches Material zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe Wörlitzer Gartenreich mitgebracht...
... und dazu neben der seit 2008 obligatorischen Schokoladenbox auch eine wirklich schöne und seltene Gabe: Potsdamer Dreispitz - Papiersonnenuhren, von Herrn Prof. Liebscher liebenswürdigerweise für den Tagungsort Chaville und für das CCS/ SAF-Büro in der Beethovenstraße 3 in Paris berechnete Faltsonnenuhren, die in der Mittagspause wie warme Semmeln weggingen. Die Erklärungen hatte Herr Prof. Liebscher eigens in Französischer Sprache aufgedruckt. Diese Sonnenuhren können über meinen Link Links heruntergeladen werden!

Von Pedro Novella habe ich eine schön dokumentierte Geschichte über die Wiederbelebung einer alten kanonischen Sonnenuhr der Kirche Santa María de Estíbaliz bekommen. Wie schön wäre es, wenn auch hierzulande etliche kanonische Sonnenuhren wieder ihren Schattenstab bekämen. Ich denke dabei an eine Sonnenuhr am Dom zu Regensburg!

BREMEN
In Bremen läßt man diese wunderschöne Sonnenuhr am Dom aus dem Jahr 1619 seit Monaten verkommen. Diverse Bitten an die Dompastoren, an die Dommanagerin, etc. blieben unbeantwortet: Morbus Pastoris! Siehe auch HIER !
Dann jedoch, nur eine Woche nach dem Erscheinen des Zeitungsartikels im Bremer Weser-Kurier erwachte die Domverwaltung und bestellte Roland Peuthert. Der sollte nicht nur den Schattenstab wieder geradebiegen, sondern endlich auch den Nodus wieder am Schattenstab anbringen und somit die Sonnenuhr wieder zum vollem Leben erwecken. Plötzlich war auch der 3. Oktober ein wichtiger Termin! Das ist der Tag an dem im Jahr 2010 turnusgemäß der kleine Stadtstaat Bremen die Feiern zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit übernimmt. Es kommen viele Gäste und Fernsehkameras von außerhalb und plötzlich sind auch die Blumenrabatte kein Hinderungsgrund mehr, mit der Reparatur zu beginnen ...

When I joined the meeting of the French Sundial Society CCS in Paris on October 25, 2008 in Paris, I got to know about this project for the first time by talks of Denis Savoie and Gérard Baillet.
A very demanding project for a giant sundial on the dry side of an enormous dam in the South of France!

If dialists are aiming for biggest, largest, longest, highest ... sundials it almost always ends up in a more or less big disaster, whether the producers see this or not: The sundial becomes just giant and nothing else!
To create a good giant sundial needs a lot of different abilities!
Calculation abilities - yes of course,
money - yes of course,
all sorts of complicated permissions - yes of course
good and very inspired workers - yes of course
But it needs much more and this is so often forgotten: It needs the ability to create a very special space and a special spirit of the location! How do people feel when they are in such a sundial? Do they feel lost and tiny or do they feel strong and inspired. This is besides the solved calculation-question and the beauty question the most important fact!

Eine katalanische Sonnenuhr für den Südpol!
Conxita Bou hat in Englisch, Französisch, Spanisch und Katalanisch die Sonnenuhren- Mailinglisten der Welt in Kenntnis davon gesetzt, daß eine ganz besondere Dreiergruppe aus Katalonien auf dem Weg zum Südpol ist. Im Gepäck haben sie auch eine Sonnenuhr, die dort zumindest einmal aufgestellt werden soll.
Dear friends, Since about a year ago, the Societat Catalana de Gnomònica has been actively working on the SUSIE Project (Sundial on the Southernmost Ices on Earth). It was born with the intention of placing a sundial that could show the time for the first time in history, at the exact geographic South Pole. In other words, we wanted to put into reality the wish to calculate and design a sundial for the most austral latitude of the planet; and our society member Xavier Valbuena would be the carrier.
This could only be possible through a unique expedition, which has been organized during the last two years. For the first time in history, a group of persons with different physical disabilities would try to reach the South Pole, advancing with their own means, through one of the areas most remote, cold, windy and dangerous of our planet: The Antarctica, with a basic objective: TO DEMOSTRATE TO THE WORLD THE GREAT ABILITY OF THE DISABLED PEOPLE.
This expedition combines together a great multiple challenge: social, educational, sportive, and scientific, that includes the carrier of the tailor-made sundial designed by the SCG. The last information we did receive yesterday is that through air transportation the members of the expedition have reach the 88ºS and have just started advancing by foot to the target location of 90ºS.

Die Expeditionsgruppe ist am 21. Januar 2009 erschöpft aber heil bei minus 32°C in der Amundsen-Scott-Station am Südpol angekommen. Siehe den guten Bericht über die Südpol-Station bei WIKIPEDIA:

Xavier Valbuena Expeditionsmitglied und Mitglied der katalanischen Sonnenuhrgesellschaft SCG hat die Sonnenuhr dem Chef der US-Amerikanischen Amundsen-Scott-Station überreicht. Sie wird mobil im Innern der Station aufbewahrt und kann bei Bedarf draußen aufgestellt werden um damit die Wahre Ortszeit von der Sonne anzeigen zu lassen! Am 24.1. geht es zurück über Patriot Hills und Punta Arenas nach Barcelona!

Am 25. Oktober 2008 habe ich an der Tagung der französischen Sonnenuhrengesellschaft "Commission des cadrans solaires (CCS)" in der "Société Astronomique de France (SAF)" teilgenommen. Ich danke den französischen Sonnenuhrenfreunden für einen äußerst inspirierenden Tag in sehr freundlicher Atmosphäre!
Ich möchte zwei Fotos zur Erinnerung einstellen: Die vier Poster zu meinem Vortrag und ein Foto von Francois Pineau während meines Vortrags über den ersten creolischen Astronomen Südamerikas, Buenaventura Suarez, sein Buch " Lunario de un Siglo" von 1748 und seine horizontale Sonnenuhr aus der Jesuiten-Reduction San Cosme y Damian in Paraguay.

In der Mai-Ausgabe 2009 des Cadran Info N°19 gibt es auch eine Zusammenfassung meines Suarez-Vortrags durch Philippe Sauvageot, worüber ich mich gefreut habe. Ich habe die beiden Seiten in den Paraguay-Link eingestellt.

Sehr hübsch und sehr liebenswürdig fand ich aber auch eine Marginalie auf Seite 25!

Am 17. und 18. Oktober 2009 durfte ich wieder Gast bei der französischen Sonnenuhrgesellschaft CCS sein und konnte im Palais de la Découverte einen Vortrag über die Mittagsweiser vor persischen Moscheen - zur Bestimmung des Beginns des obligatorischen Zuhr Mittagsgebets - halten.

Die Werfthallen sind verwaist, dafür gibt es noch Punks in der Stadt, richtige Achtziger-Jahre-Punks mit zum Himmel gezwirbelten Haaren, die manchmal an Silvester die Schaufensterscheiben einschmeißen, von den paar Geschäften, die noch nicht Pleite gegangen sind. Systematischer Bilderdiebstahl aus www.ta-dip.de
Meine mannigfaltige und sehr sorgfältig gepflegte Webseite hat zu allen Zeiten auch Diebe angelockt. Ich weiß durch zwei Server-Infos, wer sich wann auf ta-dip „bedient“, das heißt ungefragt Webseiten-Inhalte runterlädt und abspeichert. Kürzlich habe ich wieder einen professionellen Server dabei erwischt, wie er Bilder, die im www.ta-dip- Impressum eindeutig mit einer Copyright-Erklärung geschützt sind, abgefischt hatte und mit eigenen Inhalten verknüpft neu ins Netz gestellt hat. Ich habe den Geschäftsführer am 6.6.2013 bei fünf Bildern aufgefordert, dies zu unterlassen!
